True Blood

So, last week I watched the premier of the HBO series True Blood based on the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlene Harris. I actually went out and read the first book the week before the series came out so that I would have some clue as to what was going on.

I think I should have skipped the book.

I'm not sure why, but Dead Until Dark, just didn't do it for me. There's just someting about the characters that didn't quite click for me. Sookie seemed almost too-stupid-to-live and that is one trait that I can not tolerate in a heroine of any kind. Also, the interaction between the siblings really bothered me. I have brothers. If one of them ever dared slap me, there'd be hell to pay, no matter what the situation.

That being said, the HBO series was surprisingly good. The story line followed the opening half of the first book from the beginning to the part where Sookie get attacked. It followed the book fairly faithfully. I'd be interested to know how long it does that.

I could have done without all the random nudity, and I didn't quite get the gargling cat noises the one vampire was making, but Ann Paquin did a good job of playing a naive southern girl from a small town without being annoying. I especially liked the way she laughed at Bill for being Bill the Vampire. I also liked the inclusion of Tara. I'm not sure if she's from later books or if they created the character for the TV show, but she's sure not in the first one. She was fun.

All in all I have no desire to read any more of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, but I'm going to give True Blood a chance. I think I'd like to see where it goes.

Life, or something like it

So, I haven't posted for a while. I guess, it's not really a big deal, but real life has been getting me down recently. I've been pretty miserable. My job is not so great. The problem is more with the manager than the job, but... I think I'll be heading out of there soon.

In order to get my life back on track, I've changed up the daily routine a little. No more sleeping in and being lazy for me. I've started getting up early, going running, checking my e-mail regularly, and writing again. I've already written over 5,000 words this month. So, despite the upcoming talk I'm going to have to have with my boss, I'm feeling like I'm in a much better place.

Also, the grad school search seems to be moving along. Go me! I'm still not sure where I'm going to end up, but I'll let you know when I get there.

In Which I Have Weird Dreams

So, last night I had a crazy dream. I was a cyborg, and so were all of my friends and family. Most people seemed to be cyborgs. Anyway, you couldn't tell by looking at someone whether they were a cyborg or not, and no one really cared. Then the government sent out these huge robots (ala X-Men Sentinels except, no purple) to kill all the cyborgs because they were afraid of us. It turned out to be very violent and bloody, with me trying to keep everyone safe and defeat the robots. There was fire, explosions, screaming people, death, destruction, and general mayhem.

It was very graphic.

When I woke up my very first thought was that would make such a great Nano plot! The hazards of writing I guess. Everything becomes material for the muse.

Word Count Goal: I'd love to hit 70,000 but I'll be thrilled if I hit 50,000

Advice For Newcomers: Once you get past the exciting beginning, you are going to hate your story. That's right, you're going to hate it. You're going to think that every word you've written is total crap, that your characters are being difficult on purpose, and that your plot isn't even worth writing. Take heart, this is normal. It's all part of the process. There are tricks to getting past the Middle during Nano. (1) Participate in word wars, they force you to get words down on the page. (2) Go to your local write-ins. Find encouragement with others who are in the same place and can help you. (3) Find a writing buddy, for the same reasons as previously stated. Finally (4) Just keep writing. The thing about Nano is that the quality of your writing doesn't matter. If you're stuck, kill a character, add a character, have a disaster, something, anything, just to keep going.

Alright folks! It's October, the month of Halloween, family birthdays, the GRE (again), and, most importantly, the month before Nanowrimo!! In other words I have a lot going on this month. Also, I am still unemployed. Go figure.

Anyway, I'm currently studying and researching for all things above, so say hi and let me know you're all still alive out there. Oh, and I have recently become addicted to facebook. I know, I know, I'm years behind everyone else, but if your on facebook and you're not my friend yet, look me up. If you're not on facebook, get on it.
